  • As the deployment of consumer electronic devices, industrial sensors, and internet of things (IoT) electronics continues to grow, so too does the need for these devices to be powered wirelessly.  The majority of such products (e.g., handheld remote controls for televisions) rely on AA or AAA disposable batteries or rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for their power.  Developed by some of the most prominent researchers of green chemistry and alternative solar power technology, Ambient Photonics has developed a solar photovoltaic cell that outperforms the current state of the art by 300%, enabling sensors, IoTs, computer accessories, electronic shelf labels, and even e-readers to operate entirely battery-free.

  • Steel has been made essentially the same way for thousands of years, by using carbon as a chemical reductant. Today, that process is responsible for about 8% of global CO2 emissions. Boston Metal has developed a game-changing electrolysis process for making steel. In their Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) cell, an inert metallic anode is immersed in an electrolyte containing iron ore. The result is a clean, high purity liquid metal that can be sent directly to ladle metallurgy — no reheating required.

  • Perovskites are a relatively new class of semiconductors that have emerged over the past two decades as a means to generate more electrons from incident sunlight at a lower cost compared to traditional PV modules.  Caelux has developed a proprietary formulation of the material and a manufacturing process that allows deployment in tandem with any other solar panel made of silicon.

  • Many consider fusion to be the ‘Holy Grail’ of clean energy because it has the potential to power the grid with minimal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Supported by the world’s leading investors in breakthrough energy technologies, Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has assembled a world-class team of experts in magnets, manufacturing, and plasma physics dedicated to the mission of delivering clean, limitless fusion power to the world.

  • Debut uses a proprietary platform technology called cell-free biomanufacturing to unlock and overcome the limitations of cell-based techniques. This process retains the useful parts of the cell, such as enzymes, and discards the limiting parts of the cell to overcome the barriers of traditional biomanufacturing. Debut provides access to complex and high-value ingredients for a vast number of markets.

  • The current generation of AI hardware (TPU, GPU, CPU) is not optimized for edge AI especially as the complexity of tasks and memory requirements increases. Femtosense has developed a 2D array of tightly coupled digital compute and memory blocks that exploit
network sparsity coupled with an algorithm that trains networks to expose their underlying sparsity while maintaining performance. This coupled hardware and algorithm approach allows Femtosense to deliver the AI performance of large models in constrained edge platforms.

  • mmWave is critical to the future of all wireless technology, but the realization of its potential faces severe roadblocks. Weak uplink, high deployment costs, low 5G radio efficiency and soaring operating costs are all combining to thwart the promise of mmWave. Currently, 5G networks are being held back from realizing their true potential due to a critical missing component: high-performance mmWave power amplifier technology. High-performance GaN-on-Silicon (GaN-on-Si) brings a new option to the table that could make 5G millimeter wave more practical. Finwave’s award-winning 3DGaN technology improves linearity, output power and efficiency in 5G mmWave systems – while reducing costs for carriers.

  • Hedron is building a network of data relay satellites that will help solve the connectivity problems faced by remote sensing constellations. Earth Observation (EO) satellites spend 70% of their orbits in connectivity blackout zones, forced to hold their critical data onboard until the next downlink opportunity. With leading multi-aperture optical technology, Hedron is building the infrastructure that makes high bandwidth, low latency connectivity to space a reality.

  • Fat is the single most important sensory component in meat, but the plant oils currently used in meat alternatives lack the physical properties and flavor of animal fat. Hoxton Farms combines cell biology and mathematical modeling to produce cultivated animal fat, the key ingredient that will unlock meat alternatives that look, cook, and taste like the real thing.

  • Mainspring’s research into high-efficiency methods of converting fuel to electricity led to the development of their Linear Generator – distinct from an engine, microturbine, or fuel cell – that directly converts motion along a straight line into electricity using chemical energy. Mainspring is now commercializing the industry’s first linear generator to maximize efficiency, resilience, and flexibility in electricity production while significantly lowering both emissions and cost.  Their linear generators are fully dispatchable, able to track both electricity demands and renewables production and can also seamlessly switch between renewable fuels such as biogas and hydrogen and conventional fuels such as natural gas and propane.

  • Today, businesses use an energy-intensive technique called separation to filter out the valuable methane from other gases. That often requires using fossil fuels to boil off the unwanted chemicals.  Osmoses, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology spinoff, has created a membrane material thinner than human hair to reduce carbon emissions from industrial processes such as natural gas production.

  • To combat global warming, traditional methods for energy generation, conversion, and transportation must be electrified. This transition, however, requires deployment of power electronics at such high voltages that our current silicon processors are no longer suited for high-efficiency operations.  Silicon carbide—a wide bandgap semiconductor—can withstand approximately 10x higher voltages than silicon and is, thus, ideally suited for the electrification revolution.  Though silicon carbide has been historically one of the most difficult materials to manufacture, Pallidus leverages an entirely new process using organo-silicate precursor materials to grow ultra-high purity, large-scale SiC wafers.

  • Modern agriculture faces increasing challenges due to climate change and population growth. Humanity needs to produce more food to sustain a growing population while significantly reducing emissions. Current methods to improve crops are severely limited by development time and cost. Phytoform’s technology significantly speeds up trait development and implementation, producing new plant traits in months rather than years, and at a fraction of the cost of conventional breeding and GMO technologies.
